2012 Hongkong Bank Foundation Coaching Awards
The 2012 Hongkong Bank Foundation (HBF) Coaching Awards reached a spectacular climax on 21 April 2013 at the InterContinental Hong Kong, with the local sports community coming together for a gala luncheon to celebrate the achievements of Hong Kong coaches. The Awards programme recognises the valuable contribution of coaches to the Hong Kong sports community and pays tribute to their dedication and commitment. The coaching awards presentation ceremony has become a prestigious annual event in the local sporting calendar, and attracted over 270 guests this year.

Officiating guests of the ceremony were the Hon Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, GBS, JP, the Chief Secretary for Administration; Mr Pang Chung, SBS, BBS, Hon. Secretary General of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC); Professor Frank Fu, MH, JP, Chairman of the Hong Kong Coaching Committee (HKCC); Ms Kathy Wong, Secretary of the Advisory Committee of the Hongkong Bank Foundation.; and Dr James Lam, JP, Board of Director of the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI).

In his welcome speech, Professor Frank Fu was pleased that athletes in Hong Kong had performed so well at international level and commended that such outstanding achievements were the concerted efforts of both the coaches and the athletes. He said, “Our athlete’s achievements in recent East Asian Games, World Championships, Asian Games and Olympic Games have made us mighty pride to be a Hong Kong citizen. However, without a dedicated and strong coaching team behind them, from grass root to elite levels, none of these would happen.”

Mrs Carrie Lam said, “Coaches should be recognised for their expertise and contributions to their athletes’ success. I am confident that athletes in Hong Kong will keep striving for excellence under the guidance, encouragement and support of our professional coaches.”

Ms Kathy Wong of the HBF said, “HSBC has been involved with the Hong Kong Sports Institute and the Hong Kong Coach Education Programme for a long time. At last count, more than 80,000 coaches at all levels and in all sports have benefited from the Coach Education Programme. In this, the 20th year of handing out Coaching Awards, we are pleased to see the Coach Education Programme continuing to go from strength to strength.”

Coaches were honoured in five categories: the Coach of the Year Awards, Distinguished Service Award for Coaching, Best Team Sport Coach Award, Coaching Excellence Awards and Community Coach Recognition Awards.

For the Coach of the Year Awards, a total of four coaches were being awarded. In the senior athletes category, the individual sport award went to Shen Jin-kang (Cycling), and the team event award went to Wang Rui-ji (Wheelchair Fencing).

Coach Shen led cyclist Lee Wai-sze to win a bronze medal at the Olympic Games 2012. Coach Wang’s Wheelchair Fencing team came home with two bronze team medals from the Paralympic Games 2012.

In the junior athletes category, Wong Chi-kwong (Wushu) won the individual sport award, and He Yi-ming (Badminton) won the team event award.

Coach Wong’s Wushu team won two gold, five silver and one bronze medals at the 4th World Junior Wushu Championships while Coach He’s Badminton team won the gold medal at the BWF World Junior Championships 2012.

The Distinguished Service Award for Coaching went to Poon King-hung (Gymnastics) for his dedication to the Hong Kong Gymnastics team since 2000. He has nurtured many outstanding athletes including Shek Wai-hung, Wong Hiu-ying Angel and Ng Kiu-chung who have attained outstanding achievements at national and international levels over the years.

Rugby coach Dai Rees won the Best Team Sport Coach Award this year by leading the Hong Kong team to achieve the Asian Champion in 2012.

A total of 87 coaches who led their athletes to outstanding results at international competitions received the Coaching Excellence Awards. 27 coaches received the Community Coach Recognition Awards for making a special contribution to community sports for the past three consecutive years.

The Gymnastics Association of Hong Kong, China was presented with the Most Supportive National Sports Association Award for the HBF Coach Accreditation Programme for nominating the largest number of coaches enrolled in the Coach Accreditation Programme (CAP) in 2012/13.

Hongkong Bank Foundation School Coach Seminar

School Coach Seminar - Empowering School Coaches with the Latest Knowledge

The School Coach Accreditation Programme (SCAP) plays a crucial role in equipping school coaches and teachers with the knowledge and skills they need to inspire a new generation of athletes at school environment.

To provide an opportunity for SCAP-accredited coaches and teachers to update their theoretical knowledge and practical expertise, an informative seminar was held on 1 February 2013. Professor Chow Bik Chu, Vice-Chairperson of the Physical Fitness Association of Hong Kong, China, spoke on the subject of “Muscle Stretching Skills and Application of Rubberbands in a School Environment”.

During this presentation, Professor Chow shared the latest insights on muscle stretching principles, methods and approach for proper muscle and weight training, and safety tips for muscle injury prevention. This thought-provoking seminar also included an on-site demonstration of how coaches could use various sports apparatus such as rubberbands and dumbbells to teach proper muscle strectching and strengthening skills.

The seminar attracted some 50 school coaches from a wide range of sports, and they found the seminar very useful and practical, which would benfit their students in the training routines.

 

Hongkong Bank Foundation Elite Athletes Support Scheme

Helping Elite Athletes Prepare for Career After Sport

With their sporting knowledge and experience, elite athletes are a prime source of future coaching talent. In recognition of this, the Elite Athletes Support Scheme (EASS) was established in 2007 to encourage elite athletes to take up proper training to become accredited coaches. The programme features a course schedule tailored to individual athletes’ need, including flexible class arrangements adapted to suit their rigorous training and competition schedules.

The sixth EASS was held from 28 November to 21 December 2012 where a Level 2 Coach Accreditation Programme (CAP) course was offered to 20 athletes from Badminton, Fencing, Karatedo, Windsurfing and Wushu.

Since its inception in 2007, a total of 66 elite athletes have gained CAP accreditation through the EASS, ensuring that they have the skills and knowledge they need to continue forging a career in sports.

 

Anti-Doping Seminar organised by the Hong Kong Anti-Doping Committee of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee

Enhancing knowledge on anti-doping

In order to update the anti-doping knowledge for coaches and other athlete support personnel, the Hong Kong Anti-Doping Committee (HKADC) of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC), with the support of the HKCC, organised an anti-doping seminar for around 300 participants on 30 April 2013.

With a view to addressing the anti-doping issue from a scientific perspective, the seminar “Anti-Doping Seminar for Coaches & Other Athlete Support Personnel” included two sessions delivered respectively by Dr. Yung Shu Hang, Patrick, Head & Consultant Surgeon, Arthroscopy & Sports Medicine Unit, Department of Orthopedics & Traumatology, Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong and Dr. Yvonne Yuan, Head of the Hong Kong Anti-Doping Committee, respectively.

 

Hongkong Bank Foundation Community Education Programme

Promoting Sports Awareness in Hong Kong Schools

The Community Education Programme is designed to raise the awareness of sports coaching across the community. Through a one-hour talk, the community / schools will be able to grasp an overview of the coaching system and coach education programmes in Hong Kong, as well as the importance of coaches’ code of conduct.

Between 5 December 2012 and 7 March 2013, the programme was held in five schools including the Queen Elizabeth School Old Students' Association Secondary School, Po Leung Kuk Lo Kit Sing (1983) College, Diocesan Boys’ School, Fanling Lutheran Secondary School, and Kwun Tong Maryknoll College, and attended by more than 250 students.

 

Hongkong Bank Foundation Coach Orientation Programme

Sustaining a Passion for Coaching Excellence

To ensure that potential coaches have the knowledge and resources in sports coaching, a coach orientation programme was conducted on 23 March 2013 for 24 potential softball coaches.

Held at the HKSI, this 5-hour seminar covered topics of fitness and training, sports psychology, sports nutrition, and prevention and management of sports injuries.

 

Hongkong Bank Foundation Accredited Coach Renewal Scheme

Ensure Your Accreditation Remains Up-to-date

Since September 2008, all accredited coaches in Hong Kong have been issued a Coach Accreditation Card and a Coach Logbook valid for a period of four years.

The first round of coach accreditation renewal was completed by the end of 2012. Coaches who gained accreditation in 2009 should now take action to renew their accreditation in 2013. Applications can be submitted up to 12 months before the current accreditation expires.

To maintain a valid accreditation status, accredited coaches are required to accumulate sufficient hours of Continuing Coach Education Activities (CCEA) during the previous four-year period. The minimum hours of the CCEA for renewal is of 24 hours for Level 1, 36 hours for Level 2, and 48 hours for Level 3.

Eligible CCEA include Non Sport-Specific courses, seminars and workshops organised by recognised sports or education-related organisations in Hong Kong, Mainland China or overseas, and should cover at least two different areas within the 4-year cycle.

Besides attending the above-mentioned programmes, coaches can also accumulate the CCEA hours by the following methods:

 
  • Teach courses or serve as a speaker at seminars in non sports-specific areas
  • Serve as coaching committee member in a NSA which is affiliated to the Sports Federation & Olympics Committee of Hong Kong, China; and
  • Author of peer-reviewed books or journal articles in non sports-specific areas
