School Coach Accreditation Programme

Inspiring Hong Kong’s School Teachers
Jointly offered by the Hong Kong Coaching Committee (HKCC) and National Sports Associations (NSAs), the School Coach Accreditation Programme (SCAP) is designed to improve the coaching standards of primary and secondary school teachers, especially non-PE teachers who are required to oversee sports teams and co-curricular activities. By offering these teachers a programme of formal training and accreditation, SCAP equips them with the skills and knowledge they need to nurture sporting talent at an early age, while also helping children of all abilities to enjoy sports to the full.

Widely welcomed by school heads and teachers alike, SCAP has attracted over 2,600 participants since 1998 on a wide range of sports, including Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Football, Handball, Hockey, Sports Aerobics, Squash, Table Tennis, Tennis and Volleyball. Comprising two modules, namely Sports-General Theory, and Sports-Specific Theory and Practical, SCAP awards an attendance certificate to all participants with a minimum attendance rate of 80% and who finish the examinations. Those teachers who pass the examinations and undertake a further 30 hours of practicum voluntarily in their respective sports within the next year are also awarded a School Coach Certificate.

This year’s summer programme was held from 2 to 31 July 2013, with over 160 local primary and secondary school teachers from 134 schools participating.

The sports available this summer included Badminton, Basketball, Table Tennis, Tennis and Volleyball.

The action-packed programme culminated in a Certificate Presentation Ceremony at the Hong Kong Sports Institute on 31 July 2013. During the ceremony, a number of outstanding awards were also presented to both the Christmas and Summer class teachers in recognition of their enthusiasm and dedication to school sport.

“It is inspiring to see so many school teachers embrace the potential of sports coaching,” remarked Professor Frank Fu, Chairman of the HKCC, at the ceremony. “Your commitment to this programme has not only distinguished you as true professionals, it has also laid a strong foundation for helping many more children discover the lifelong joy of sports. Thanks also to the respective NSAs for extending your keen support making the programme a success.”

Coaching Directors Forum

The Value of Sharing

The Coaching Directors Forum is an annual gathering which aims to enhance communication between coaching directors of different NSAs. On 16 July 2013, around 50 participants gathered at the Olympic House for the latest Coaching Directors Forum to discuss about the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) Qualifications Framework.

At this informative event, Ms Jackie Hau, Manager of the Qualifications Framework Secretariat and Mr. Sam Ho, Registrar at HKCAAVQ, introduced coaching directors to the concepts of the Qualifications Framework and how it could be applied to both sports-general and sports-specific education and training. In particular, Mr. Ho explained how this framework could help maintain the quality of coaching courses and further improve the recognition of such courses within the community.

Coach Accreditation Programme

Entering a New Era of Coaching Excellence

First introduced in 1991, the Coach Accreditation Programme (CAP) is dedicated to the development and accreditation of coaches in Hong Kong. Over the years, it has played a critical role in Hong Kong’s sporting success, and continues to lay a firm foundation for nurturing a new generation of sport-loving youngsters.

To ensure the programme remains effective and targeted, the curriculum of CAP is undergoing a full review currently. Before the launching of the new programme, limited CAP courses under the old curriculum can still be offered to member NSAs to meet their specific training needs. NSAs can contact the Coach Education Department directly if they require such special arrangements.

Accredited Coach Renewal Scheme

Ensure Your Accreditation Remains Up-to-date

Since September 2008, all accredited coaches in Hong Kong have been issued a Coach Accreditation Card and a Coach Logbook valid for a period of four years.

The first round of coach accreditation renewal was completed by the end of 2012. Coaches who gained accreditation in 2009 should now take action to renew their accreditation in 2013. Applications can be submitted up to 12 months before the current accreditation expires.

To maintain a valid accreditation status, accredited coaches are required to accumulate sufficient hours of Continuing Coach Education Activities (CCEA) during the previous four-year period. The minimum hours of the CCEA for renewal is of 24 hours for Level 1, 36 hours for Level 2, and 48 hours for Level 3.

Eligible CCEA include Non Sport-Specific courses, seminars and workshops organised by recognised sports or education-related organisations in Hong Kong, Mainland China or overseas, and should cover at least two different areas within the 4-year cycle.

Besides attending the above-mentioned programmes, coaches can also accumulate the CCEA hours by the following methods:

  • Teach courses or serve as a speaker at seminars in non sports-specific areas
  • Serve as coaching committee member in a NSA which is affiliated to the Sports Federation & Olympics Committee of Hong Kong, China; and
  • Author of peer-reviewed books or journal articles in non sports-specific areas

For more details of the number of countable hours for each method mentioned above, please visit www.hkcoaching.com/hk/acrs.asp or email ceddept@hksi.org.hk.
